What is it about artists that makes them delve into the self portrait?
I do not like having my picture taken and have no misguided belief that my face could launch a kayak, never mind a thousand ships...
I think the self portrait is where art and truth collide. Not that the self portrait is always an honest representation of the artist as Norman Rockwell so humorously and cleverly portrayed in his own self portrait painting.
I think because artistic people are always "creating", they are often more aware that they too, are still a work in progress... daily being molded, carved, fired, sanded, and buffed into the person they were truly created to be. Somedays are harder than others. We feel smashed. It's important to remember that as bad as being smashed feels, we are never thrown away. The Potter lifts our smashed form and brings us back to the wheel...
to begin again.
So... Here I am. 42 years old. No make-up. Grooves of worry, laughter, and thinking too much... Oh... and from squinting due to the sun because I always have my sunglasses on my head instead of on my face...
